Alabama & Florida

Camping is off to a great start, we stayed at Frank Jackson State Park, where we had a waterfront site and saw an armadillo along a hiking trail on the island.

Next stop Florala, which is situated along Lake Jackson, the lake is right along the Alabama/Florida State line. The park used to be a state park that was abandon by the state and taken over by the town of Florala. The park is quite small and mostly full of snowbirds. Our campsite was along the water, with a dock behind it and a fantastic biking trail along the lake and through the marshland.

Next stop four nights in Grayton Beach State Park along the panhandle of Florida. The sand is white as snow and the water is beautiful turquoise. We were the only ones at the beach “brave” enough to get in for a swim. The park also had great paved bike trails that went into the small towns on each side of the park. We spent lots of time on our bikes and walking the beach.

Next stop two nights at Henderson Beach State Park. This is along the same stretch of beach so the beach was just as spectacular as Grayton Beach, although this park in located within a city so quite a bit busier at the beach. We were still the only brave swimmers. We had an unusual late night visitor on our site last night…after going to bed we heard some rustling around on the campsite. I got the flashlight expecting to find a raccoon rooting around on our site…instead I opened the door and spotted a rat…a big nasty rat running across our site and climbing a tree. 🐀 Of all the animals, rats are the only one that totally gross me out…so even though it was outside it was a little sleepless for me. After further investigation we found rats are pretty common throughout the state. Among other reasons, I guess I’ll never be a Florida resident.

Tomorrow we move on to last stop in Florida is Big Lagoon State Park for three nights.
